The
legend
begins.

In 1982 Nike designer Bruce Kilgore rocked the world of hoops footwear when he introduced Air to the courts. Specifically, he added a full length Air unit to the cup sole of his new shoe, the Air Force 1, creating a shoe that was not only great on the courts, but on any surface for ballers. In turn, the AF-1 revolutionised not only the game of basketball, but also the game of sneakers forever.

35 years
on and still
going strong

35 years
on and still
going strong

With 35 years of history behind it and literally thousands of styles produced, from high to low and everything in between, the Air Force 1 is the best-selling athletic shoe of all time. But unlike other long-lived sneakers, the Air Force 1 is still a viable athletic product. For example, when was the last time you saw someone balling in Chucks or running in a pair of Cortez? Exactly.

The birth
of
"retro"

When the AF-1 debuted in 1982 it was supposed to be just another Nike basketball shoe that would stick around for a year or so before eventually being replaced by something better. But when Nike re-issued it in 1986 due to popular demand, it was unprecedented, making it the first ‘retro’ sneaker on the market. And it has stuck around ever since – class, it seems, is permanent.

Seamlessly transitioning from the courts to the streets, the AF-1 is a pioneer of sport-to-street style. And it continues to make waves, with huge cultural icons such as DJ Clark Kent becoming major proponents of the bespoke programme, which has enabled the sneaker to reach out to anyone looking to express themselves. And so the legend continues.
