Italia '90 saw Bobby Robson’s England face the Republic of Ireland, the Netherlands and Egypt in Group F. Based in, and playing all their three Group matches in Cagliari, Gary Lineker’s goal secured a 1-1 draw against the Republic of Ireland, which was followed by a 0-0 draw with the Netherlands, before a 1-0 victory against Egypt, thanks to a Mark Wright goal, saw England win the Group.
Bologna was the venue for England’s Round of 16 tie against Belgium, where David Platt’s volleyed goal, from Paul Gascoigne’s free kick was enough to give England a place in the Quarter Finals.
In The Last Eight, in Naples, David Platt gave England the lead against Cameroon but, the game was turned upside down when Cameroon first equalised; then went 2-1 ahead during 5 second half minutes. With England 8 minutes from going out of The World Cup, Lineker converted a penalty to equalise, followed by another in extra time, to give England a 3-2 victory, and a place in The World Cup Semi Finals for the first time since 1966.
The semi-final between West Germany and England, in Turin, ended 1-1, Lineker again saving England late in the game, and with extra time producing no further goals, the match was decided on penalty kicks. Lineker, Beardsley and Platt converted spot kicks but, Pearce and Waddle failed, as Germany won the shootout 4-3.
England’s final match, The Third Place Play Off against hosts Italy took them to Bari, where Salvatore Schillaci’s winner for Italy in a 2-1 victory saw “Toto” claim the Tournament Golden Boot, leaving England with the consolation prize of the Tournament Fair Play award.
