Steve Prefontaine built up a long list of achievements for a man whose life was tragically cut short so unexpectedly. To some, he must be remembered as the greatest long distance runner in American History and by far one of the most popular Track and Field athlete's of all time.

Looking back over Prefontaine's achievements, it would be hard to argue against those claims.

Prefontaine, or ''Pre'' as he was often called, was primarily a long distance runner who at one point held the American record in every running event from 2000m to the 10,000m. Pre was a runner who inspired a generation, symbolising true passion and dedication to his sport.

Prefontaine's achievements and records were previously unheard of in the athletic world. He was the first athlete to win four consecutive NCAA track titles in the same event. When Steve ran a race you knew one thing as an athlete and a spectator...the race was going to be fast. A race with Prefontaine was an exciting race from start to finish no matter who the opponents of whatever the distance. Whether it be in practice, in school, or at work, ''Pre'' refused to settle for second best. If gold wasn't an option then he wouldn't be in the race. He would invariably lead the field from the start and unlike a pace-maker who would drop off, would keep going at the front until the finish.

Prefontaine's athletic ability was gaining recognition across America. In 1974, 'Pre' became an employee of an athletic shoe company started by his college coach, Bill Bowerman. That company was Nike at a young age. Nike were prepared to offer Steve money to wear Nike shoes, making him the first athlete to be paid by Nike. Steve's working relationship with Nike demonstrated his dedication to the sport. He would send personal letters and free shoes to his top rivals, asking them to try the shoes.
