The Air Max Light was originally released in 1989 as the Air Max II as the intended successor to the Air Max.
By replacing the forefoot polyurethane mid sole with a phylon one, Nike were able to make the Air Max Light weigh considerably less than the original. The shoe was marketed as a performance running shoe, with the famous Air Max cushioning providing added support.
The Air Cushioning Technology, which made the shoe so famous, was introduced by Nike in 1979 and embedded Air Cushioning in the mid soles of the shoes.
This was a revolutionary step in performance running and changed the way athletes approached their sport forever. Despite the technologies huge success, Nike refused to stop there.
